Why New Process Development is Different
Creating new and novel processes and products requires a fundamentally different approach from standard engineering design work. New technology development is highly uncertain, tightly constrained, complex, multidimensional, and non-linear.
The best way to understand the problem is to think of the development process as a very large decision tree with almost an infinite number of potential paths, and if you are lucky only a small number of those paths would lead to a commercially viable process, and if you are unlucky none of the paths will work.
Unfortunately, each path is highly uncertain, and you only have a limited amount of time and resources, so you can only explore a tiny fraction of the possible paths. So, the goal of developing a new technology is to find the right path as quickly and efficiently as possible.
