Create New Technologies

The purpose of New Process Engineering, is to make engineering better. To make a step change in the standard, quality, and performance of engineering.

Over the last 20 years I have noticed a steady decline in the standard of engineering, in the way it is taught, practiced and delivered. And I’ve seen this in all areas of engineering and across all industries that I have worked in, and if the trend continues, I worry what the engineering industry will look like in 20 year’s time. And I think this is a problem for at least two main reasons.

Firstly, because engineering is awesome. I don’t think there are many feelings like facing an impossible problem, struggling for weeks, until that ‘aha’ moment when the solution hits you, and then implementing it and seeing it work in practice (actually, it normally only half works in practice, and then you have to work out how to fix it again). A failing engineering industry means less people get to experience the joy and fulfilment of engineering.

And the second reason is the obvious one. Practically every product you have ever used was engineered, from your phone, to the liquids you drink, to the electricity that runs hospitals and the medicine they administer. And any future crisis that humanity faces, from pandemics to asteroids to climate change, will require engineering solutions to solve them. Hence, the quality of our engineering correlates with the quality of our world.

Which is why I think it is so important to reverse the decline in engineering, and get better at creating incredible engineers and amazing technologies

However, I’m not sure the best way to fix the problem. I believe the best place to start is with creating new technologies, because that is the future of the industry. But I don’t know what will have the biggest impact, doing the work, creating content, teaching, public speaking, politics (I really hope not!) or growing a business.

So, like any business, this is an experiment, and its currently in the pilot plant stage, and the purpose is to work out the best way to make a step change in the engineering industry, and that is what New Process Engineering is for.
